This page includes impressions of what the Bible has to say with respect to Gentile else Jewish supremicism in the Body Of Christ. The principles apply for the most part to any form of supremicism operating within the church. It alludes to the serious consequences any such supremicism can herald.
In this bloggers opinion while Paul presents to us in Romans 4 through 8 the doctrine of Atonement, it appears as though Paul has as bookends to these chapters a denounciation of both the Jewish and the Gentile boast. Much of Romans chapter 1 through parts of chapter 4 address the Jewish boast. Chapters 9 through chapters 11 address the gentile boast. It is as though Paul in Romans is engaged in making a desperate plea appealing to both Jews and Gentiles who have been blessed by membership into the Church of Christ to abandon any boasting which could be traced to Ethnic Supremicism.
To the Jew he says the following:
[27] Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. [Romans 3:27]
To the Gentile in Christ he he issues a strong wrarning:
[18] Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. ………
[21] For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. [Romans 11:18,21]
For sure he heartily acknowledges that God our Father being the Potter has the Soverign right and indeed does bless persons or even ethnicities of HIS choosing, but while doing so Paul simultaneously attempts to check any high mindedness that may linger in the heart or spirit of the blessed, for to Paul it is all about GRACE — God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense, and not of works lest ANYONE should boast. Besides, to Paul the ills of boasting posed an existential threat. [Romans 11:22]. To Paul it was clear that blessing, precluded boasting, and that blessing and accountability went hand in hand. He wrote:
[9] Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
[10] But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
[11] For there is no respect of persons with God. [Romans 2. 9,11]
It appears to this blogger that when we see phrases that sound as though God intended to bless Israel above and beyond other nations, say as in the clause found in Romans 1:16:
[16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
It appears to this blooger, the order of blessing is primarily related to the historic order of progression of our Father’s ultimate plan for salvation of the world at large. It was God our Fathers hope, that the Jews in “first” receiving Light would then spread that Light to the Gentiles. To them were given the Oracles of God [Romans 3:2]. This included a chronological order for/of blessing — “to the Jew FIRST, and then the Greek,” but with it was also cradled an expectation of service, which if not met would render “tribulation and anguish,” to the Jew FIRST, and then the Gentile.
What is the point? Precisely this: Our Lord, In Luke 12:48 is seen saying:
For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. [Luke 12:48]
At Mount Sinai also the imagery conveyed in Romans 1:16 combined with Romans 2:9-11 is in display, confirming the often stated New Testament refrain with respect to Jewish-Gentile distinction “For there is no respect of persons with God.” [Romans 2:11]. The Hebrews being delivered from Egypt en route to the promised land are seen to be in a state of constant murmur in the short period of approximately three months after crossing the red sea in which the waters literally were parted by the Father to engender their escape from Pharoah’s armies. But then within three months of the deliverance our heavenly Father is grieved and says the following of HIS chosen people.
[9] And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
[10] Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. [Exodus 32:9,10]
It is in this milieu that God calls Moses to Mount Sinai to give Moses the Law and the commandments that he wishes mandated over His Hebrew chosen. Our Father pronounces a blessing should the nation be obedient to His holy order:
[13] And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them: [Deuteronomy 28:13]
However as in Romans 2:9, the flip side is also the hard truth. Disobedience would result in judgement that would literally reverse the blessing. Deuteronomy 28:43,44 reads:
[43] The stranger that is within thee shall get up above thee very high; and thou shalt come down very low.
[44] He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.
In the New Testament our Lord Himself issues a similar warning if you will. In Matthew 21:42,43 having found the nation of Israel in a state of apostasy for the most part, our Lord says:
Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. [Matthew 21:43]
And yet we, as this blogger is, remains mindful of the fact, that there are numerous scriptures that “the gifts and the calling of God to His beloved Israel are without repentance. [Romans 11:29] Our Father’s relentless love for His Hebrew “my chosen,” is all over the place, as manifest in scripture. To Israel He says:
[15] Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. [Isaiah 49:15]
In keeping with this Paul issues a warning to Gentiles who have come to Christ. He reminds them/me that I am grafted into a “Jewish Olive Tree,” Rhetorically in this bloggers view, Paul describes the phenomena as an un-grafting of the Jews that Gentiles may be grafted in but warns that “boasting” carried with it the existential threat of being un-grafted. Paul here regards the Jews as “the natural branches,” and admonishes that Gentile supremicism be held in check by the “wild branches” who by grace have been included into the “Commonwealth of Israel” [Romans 11, Ephesians 2:12].
Yet, Paul noting that in the ultimate analysis, whether it be Jew or Gentile, Slave or Free in his culminating chapter on the doctrine of salvation to both Jews and Greeks, says the following in Romans 11.32,33,36.
[32] For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.
[33] O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!
…………
[36] For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. [Romans 11:32,33,36]
This blogger overall remark is, that while Gentile Supremicism often reaching the heights of — Antisemitism–has been prevalent in the Church and in segments of society at large, Jewish Supremicism may also be prevalent in segments of the modern Hebrew Roots, Messianic Movement. The consequence of both is that in interpretation of scripture instead of “rightly dividing the word of truth,” [2 Timothy 2:15] we wind up “Ethnically dividing the word of truth.” Thereby both the Jewish else the Gentile bias appears to this blogger to fail us, delivering monumental erroneous consequences. False assumptions, have bred false expectations and untold disappointments.
Surely scripture points to many an instance in which our heavenly Father appears to favor an individual, a tribe, or even a nation over another. And yet we must assume that though the sovereign Potter has a “right over the clay,” and we as the clay must honor this right without envying the blessed, the scripture appears to present in many an instance a larger purpose attached to sovereign election. [Romans 9:21; Acts 10:34]. Even Sovereign election is not arbitrary. But rather purposeful and including larger intentions in the Heart of the Father that are not immediately revealed. [Deuteronomy 29.29; 1 Cor. 13:9-12]. And a few things are intrinsically attached to the singular blessing God our Father bestows on an individual person, tribe, nation, institution, a church etc.
-
- Any or all boasting is precluded [Romans 3:9,23; 5:20]
- And to whom more is given more is expected of the beneficiary. [Matthew 21:43, Luke 12:48]
All boasting is precluded, period. Numerous examples that alluded to this truth fill scripture. Lets just name one.
In Revelations chapter 4 we are invited to witness a heavenly scene unfolding before John the elder’s eyes. John is given a glimpse into the Throne Room of our Father. It is both a glorious and an holy place. At the Father’s Throne are sitting 24 elders dressed in splendid white raiment, and having on their heads crowns not of silver but of gold. This is Revelations Chapter 4, Verse 4. By the time we get to Revelations 4, Verse 20, the scene has dramatically changed. When the four beasts, full of eyes and six wings, cry Holy, Holy, Holy, John is exposed to a scene of celestial humility. The 24 sitting elders, arise, bow down and cast their golden crowns before the glassy sea. All boasting is precluded, the LAMB OF GOD who takest away the sins of the world is ever before them, they see It/Him in the midst of the Throne, seated at the right hand of the Father and Blood-Stained, they know that all blessing is of GRACE _ God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.
Any form of boasting, whatever be the reason is error.
From the heavenly to the earthly, we see the following:
[13] As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. …….
[21] Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? [Romans 9:21]
But then in the context of ethnic supremicism which is the purpose of this blog, Paul is suggesting that if Jacob is to be equated to be the chosen Jew and Esau equated to be the by-passed Gentile there was something hidden that was not yet fully revealed — the Father’s heart for the Gentiles. Paul argues that yes indeed the Father initially chose Jacob the Jew but Esau the Gentile’s election was to be made manifest at a later chronological date, thus demonstrating “the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
[22] What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
[23] And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,
[24] Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? [Romans 9:21-24]
It appears that in the final analysis Paul’s understanding in the larger scheme of things is not that the Jacob was chosen over Esau, but that from an eternal perspective both Jacob the Jew and Esau the Gentile were chosen from the foundation of the world “afore prepared unto glory,” one just happened to come later from our earthly perspective of dealing with time, but from God’s perspective it was “yea and amen” to both,” for our heavenly Father is not a respecter of men. [Romans 2:11].
The Ecclesia–the called out ones– is termed else alluded to variously as the Lamb’s Wife, His Body, His temple, His Chosen. His Children, His Sheep, His Friends. etc. Of this Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 14:25,26:
[24] For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked:
[25] That there should be no schism in the body….
For Paul, both “the chosen” as in Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and the “not chosen,” as in the rest of Adam’s race, were met in due time by the Second Adam [1 Corinthians 15:21,22; Romans 5:18,19].
In Romans 9:25,26, Paul quotes the Prophet Hosea :
[25] As he saith also in Osee [Hosea] , I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
[26] And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. [Romans 9:25,26]
In these words, Paul is saying that Esau which appeared at one time to “not be God’s Chosen,” in the eternal heart and mind of God was meant to be “God’s Chosen.” Even as Hosea declared the Father’s heart.
[23] ………..and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God. [Hosea 2:23]
For Paul the thrust of his revelation all through his epistles be it Galatians, Ephesians, Collosians, Romans, Phillipians is essentially the same — “God so loved the WORLD… [John 3:16].
Our Lord’s genealogy does not merely have its roots with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Ruth, and Boaz and David, and Joseph and Mary, but like Melcizedek it transcends human genealogy. Matthew 1:1-17 gives us the Jewish version of his genealogy, Luke 3:34-38 includes HIS non-Jewish roots. The Lion of Judah, the Son of David had for non-Jewish ancestry the salient figures of Melcizedek, Noah, and Enoch all the way to Adam who lived approximately 2000 years or more before the birth of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And to cap it all, the book of Hebrews is dedicated to our LORD’s eternal ancestry. For its opening statement it says:
[1] God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
[2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [Hebrews 1:1,2]
And with respect to genealogy, it is said of our Saviour, “Immanuel” — God with us! [Matthew 1:23] Surely this is not strictly Jew or Greek, but rather “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” [1 Corinthians 9:22; Phillipians 2:6-9 ]
[6] For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. [Isaiah 9:6]
With the intent that we do not limit the pedigree of our our Lord’ to the natural realm of creation, our Transcendent Son Of God reminded his Jewish brethren that “David called Him LORD,” [Psalm 110:1,2, Matthew 22:4, Matt. 22:41-46] , and that “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad,” [John 8:56] and then again: “Before Abraham was, I am.”[John 8:58] Paul concludes “In Christ,”
In The “One New Man” [Eph. 2;15]
There is Neither Jew or Greek…..ONE…..In Christ Jesus [Galatians 3:26-28].
The New Man….. After the Image Of Him…..where there is Neither Jew or Greek,…. [Colossians 3:10,11]
Having Abolished in HIS FLESH the Enemity, even the Law and Commandments…. to make In Himself….. One New Man [Ephesians. 2:15]
[Luke 16:15, John 1:16,17, Ephesians 2:20]
In this bloggers opinion Classical Dispensationalism in the process of imposing dispensations that willfully hold the scriptures in a state of imbalance–partially dividing the Word Of Truth, has been a key contributor to a tacit spirit of supremicism that pervades much of prophetic church.
The blogger states that for Paul it appears as though once “IN CHRIST,” spiritually speaking, there is “neither Jew or Greek” but a new creature. While in Romans 14:2-14, Acts 15, Acts, 21:24-27, Acts 28:17, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION of one’s faith that takes into consideration one’s ethnic disposition is granted to us “In Christ ,” nothing different is mandated of the “once Jew or Gentile,” that is ethnically driven.
Casually speaking, “Supremicism is a very strong force, so let’s not kid ourselves into thinking that it does not enter into the spiritual discourses of our day……..” To this blogger, this is apparent and present. Further, to this blogger, it appears as though it is probably one of the strongest factors heralding false prophecy in the prophetic arena. Ethnicity, nationality, race, color and the like when brought into prophetic mix to this blogger is both a prescription and a sure formula for disaster.
John the elder, has already told us, “Many false prophets have gone into the world. ” [ 1 John 4:1] You or I could very easily be one of them, if our motives are not absolutely a desire for the Father’s singular Mind alone.
